In 2000, two veterans of the energy trading industry recognized a gap in the global commodities market: the world needed more agile, sophisticated logistics solutions to move physical energy from where it was sourced to where it was demanded most. Torbjörn Törnqvist and Gennady Timchenko founded Gunvor with this insight, building from scratch what would become one of the world's largest independent commodities trading houses by turnover. They understood that energy trading wasn't just about buying and selling - it was about solving complex logistical challenges across continents, navigating geopolitical risks, and creating value through strategic infrastructure investments.
Today, Gunvor has evolved into a global powerhouse with more than 1,600 employees across offices in Geneva, Singapore, Shanghai, Dubai, Houston, and beyond. The company moves crude oil, refined products, natural gas, LNG, biofuels, power, and base metals through a vast network of refineries, pipelines, storage terminals, and shipping vessels that it strategically owns and operates. As the energy landscape transforms, Gunvor has positioned itself at the forefront of the Energy Transition, embracing sustainability initiatives and aggressive emissions reduction targets while continuing to deliver the reliable, safe energy logistics that power economies around the world.
