Open Home Foundation is a Swiss-registered non-profit (Stiftung) established in 2024 to promote privacy, choice, and sustainability in smart home technology. The organisation owns, governs, and develops open source projects and standards as an alternative to the proprietary, data-driven models of major technology companies. It positions privacy, user choice, and environmental sustainability as fundamental rights within the connected home.
The foundation oversees more than 250 open source projects, standards, drivers, and libraries. Its portfolio includes Home Assistant, a leading open source smart home automation platform; ESPHome, a system for creating custom firmware for ESP8266 and ESP32 microcontrollers; Music Assistant, an open source music management system; HACS (Home Assistant Community Store), an integration for installing custom components; and Piper, an open source text-to-speech engine.
With a team of over 50 full-time employees, the foundation works across open source software, smart home automation, standards development, and driver development. It is funded by commercial partners Apollo Automation and Nabu Casa. The organisation's structure is designed to protect its projects from corporate acquisition and ensure long-term continuity, while it actively advocates for open standards and educates both the public and policymakers.
