Whisk

Whisk is a food technology and food intelligence platform using AI, computer vision and food data to connect recipes, products and shopping choices, and serves as the food intelligence arm of Samsung Health.

Whisk is a food technology and food intelligence platform that connects recipes, products and shopping choices, using artificial intelligence to power the creation, discovery, personalisation and monetisation of food content. Founded in 2012, the company was acquired by Samsung in 2019 and now operates as the food intelligence and nutrition arm of Samsung Health.

The engineering work spans several domains: computer vision (Vision AI) for food and meal recognition, nutrition and food data built around the Food Genome knowledge graph, behaviour-change systems, personalisation and recommendation, and data engineering. These capabilities are delivered to partners and developers through the Whisk REST API, which provides recipe feed and search, shopping lists, meal planning and personalisation as platform services. On the consumer side, the Samsung Food app (formerly Whisk) offers a recipe feed and search, shopping lists, meal planning and personalisation; it was named in Google Play's Best of 2020 Everyday Essentials list, is regularly featured on the Apple App Store and was nominated for a 2021 Webby Award.

Whisk employs more than 100 people in a remote-first arrangement, with team members in more than 30 countries. The company describes its operating model as combining startup agility with the scale of a large corporation, within industry verticals including food technology, health and nutrition, the Samsung device ecosystem, grocery and e-commerce, and digital recipe content.
